Chapter 177: Fractures

More and more days passed, yet Monty never sensed another attack on the caravan. Lithia’s orders had been followed, and the caravan nearly rode every hour of the day, only taking short breaks now and then to give the horses some form of respite. The old man had to nearly force the healing down their throats each time they stopped, lest the poor beasts would have already collapsed from exhaustion.

In those few days, they had made more progress than they would have done in two weeks. It was an incredible pace but not one that could be kept up for long. Yet due to the location they were passing through, there was little chance of Lithia allowing them to rest for long.

"We have to get through the tighter passage," Thalia explained as they continued down the well-travelled road, the compact dirt letting the wagon move along smoothly. Many travelled here. "To the west of here is quite the crater. It isn’t deadly or anything, but the wheels get forced all the way down into the earth if you try to travel there. Not the best thing for these wagons."

"And in the east?" Monty questioned.

"That would be devil territory," Thalia answered with a grimace. "If this wasn’t the normal—and only—route, we would have likely taken another path down to the dwarves. Using one of the airships could’ve worked if they weren’t so damn expensive with their weight limits."

Monty looked to the east, seeing nothing but normal grass. Even [Mana-Sense] had no insight, spotting nothing but green all the way to the horizon. Even Roy, high up in the sky, saw nothing unusual.

"That’s certainly unsettling then," Monty said, going in to take a short rest. Rex followed along, the rat always happy to mimic that part of the old man’s nature. The [Cleric] would have preferred the [Familiar] to practise its skills or something, yet the rodent was more focused on having as much physical contact with the man as possible. Perhaps it was just a difference in race. Monty could remember learning about rats being especially social creatures.

Closing his eyes and getting into the prime mood for shutting off his mind, Monty instead found himself connecting to the two [Familiars] already on his mind. It was incredible how the bond had been growing in recent days. There wasn’t any form of consistency to it, but the old man had been getting flashes of vision from Roy and Rex alike. The two animals had eyes and the feedback coming through the connection was making sure Monty understood that fact. When the old man had his own sensations drowned out, it became so much easier to see what they were seeing, hear what they were hearing, and feel the vibrations of the wind.

Even in dreams, the connection carried over. It had been subtle, but Monty had begun to notice the two animals in the dream world. His dreams were still as chaotic as everything else, though they now just had two [Familiars] sitting in the back as well, clearly bored out of their minds.
